The best Georgian grape varieties and their wines

The diversity of Georgian wine is due to the distinctive, centuries-old grape varieties of our country. Each variety is unique and gives the wine its own character, aroma and taste. Archaeological, genetic and ethnographic studies confirm that the culture of grapevine and wine in Georgia originated approximately 8,000 years ago, which gives Georgia a distinguished place in the history of wine.

In this blog, we will introduce you to the best Georgian grape varieties and the outstanding wines that these varieties produce.

Genetic diversity of grapevines

More than 500 local grape varieties are registered in Georgia, which is one of the highest figures in the world. Among them are both internationally recognized varieties (Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, Mtsvane, Kisi), as well as lesser-known and rare varieties (Chkhaveri, Otskhanuri Sapere, Krakhuna, Tavkveri), which have survived in small areas and have been actively returning to winemaking in recent years. Thanks to the efforts of Georgian winegrowers and winemakers, wines from these varieties are attracting increasing interest in the international market.

Vine as culture and tradition

Grapes and wine are an integral part of Georgian identity and cultural heritage. They are reflected in Georgian folklore, literature and architecture. The traditional method of winemaking in qvevri is recognized by UNESCO as a model of world cultural heritage. Of particular importance is the harvest festival, a holiday that unites families and society. The culture of the Georgian table, the institution of tamadoba and the ritual of toasting further emphasize the importance of wine in everyday life.

Distinctive Georgian grape varieties

  1. Rkatsiteli - the most widespread variety in Georgia. It is mainly grown in Kakheti, but it is also found in Kartli and other regions. Dry, semi-dry and traditional qvevri (amber) wines are made from Rkatsiteli. The wine is distinguished by its citrus, green apple and floral aromas, good acidity and balanced taste.

  2. Saperavi - Georgia's most popular red grape variety. It is especially widespread in Kakheti, Kartli, and Racha-Lechkhumi. Saperavi produces full-bodied, powerful, and long-lasting wines, characterized by notes of blackberry, cherry, black plum, and spices.

  3. Kisi - This white variety, common in Kakheti, has become especially popular in recent years. Kisi wines are characterized by intense aromas of tropical fruits, honey, citrus, and flowers. Kisi is often used for wines made using the qvevri technology.

  4. Chkhaveri - mainly distributed in the Guria and Adjara regions and has attracted special interest in recent years. Chkhaveri is used to make delicate, aromatic, pleasantly acidic, rosé and white wines, which have light aromas of strawberry, raspberry and citrus.

  5. Khikhvi - Found in eastern Georgia, mainly in Kakheti. Its wine is distinguished by its lightness, with flavors of peach, apricot, tropical fruits, and flowers. It is considered ideal for storing in a qvevri.

  6. Alexandroupoli and Mujuretuli - these two varieties belong to the Racha-Lechkhumi region. Their blend is used to make the famous wine "Khvanchkara", which is distinguished by its semi-sweet, refined and rich fruity aromas. It is especially popular in local and international markets.

  7. Otskhanuri Sapere - A red grape variety common in Imereti and Racha. Otskhanuri Sapere wine is characterized by a sharp, strong taste, high tannins, and black fruit aromas, which is why it has special potential for long-term aging.

These varieties and their unique wines highlight the diversity of Georgian vines and wines and the country's special importance on the world winemaking map.

Conclusion

Georgian wine culture is an integral part of our country's identity. Local grape varieties, traditions, and regional diversity give Georgian wine its uniqueness and high international potential. Today, when the world pays special attention to diversity and authenticity, Georgian wine has a great opportunity to establish a distinctive place on the international wine map.
